Claudia Comte, 12.12.1983 Grancy. Swiss artist. Her work is defined by her interest on the memory of materials and by a careful observation of how the hand relates to different technologies. Did you know that permanently frozen wood is still very well preserved after 2–4000 years? that wood „remembers“ the climate conditions of the planet? But even stones are not what they seem. Marble entails the Oceans, life under water is crystallized and it would be inaccurate to see this material as hard, since it is liquid at its core. Carving by hand, or scanning or 3D printing all are functions of a knowledge that sculpture possesses and shares with all of us every time a new piece comes to life. What we need to learn is how to see - in every pattern, and, object- an environment, oxygen, the way the conditions of our planet modify the materials. Comte studied at the Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne, ECAL (2004-2007) followed by a Masters of Art in Science of Education at Haute Ecole Pédagogique, Visual Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland (2008-2010). Her body of work is best known for her site-specific installations. The artist's practice is guided by a distinct rule-measurement system of her own creation, wherein each artwork specifically relates to one another. Comte's minimalist approach to art making is equal parts methodical and dynamic; works are infused with a distinct sense of playfulness. Her artistic output incorporates a diverse range of mediums from sculpture, to painting, to various multimedia installations.

Claudia Comte, è nata nel 1983 a Grancy (Svizzera) e vive a Grancy e Berlino (D).

Campi di attività: pittura, grafica per stampa, scultura, installazione; riscuote successo su scala internazionale grazie alle ambientazioni in cui inserisce sculture e pitture murali. La sua opera si interroga sul punto di contatto tra natura, cultura popolare e cultura alta e mostra come possa essere fecondo l'incontro tra una solida abilità artigianale e le più moderne tecnologie di produzione. L'artista della Svizzera occidentale che ha ricevuto il Prix Mobilière già agli esordi nel 2012, è emersa grazie a pitture geometriche e sculture in legno dalle forme astrattamente organiche, con richiami al mondo dell'immaginario arcaico e dei cartoni animati. Comte realizza gli elementi plastici o in modo manuale con la motosega o con processi computerizzati di scansione e fresatura 3D, per poi presentarli in scenografie di grande effetto insieme alle pitture murali dai colori molto vivaci. L'installazione del 2013 (senza titolo),una delle sue prime ambientazioni, è formata da una cornice in legno lunga quasi tre metri in cui si inseriscono due oggetti di legno e sei incisioni su legno. I pannelli lignei e la scultura, il basamento e l'architettura, l'immagine e l'installazione si fondono così in una scenografia in cui la tradizione dell'avanguardia – si pensi a Constantin Brancusi o anche a Hans Arp – si sposa con forme arcaiche e la cultura dotta con quella popolare.

L'artista, ispirata dalla natura, dall'architettura e dall'arte popolare, amalgama le idee a formare spazi in cui risuona lontanamente anche l'idea dell'opera d'arte totale del Bauhaus: un costrutto architettonico che con le arti liberali e le arti applicate si fonde in un unico insieme. Sempre in precario equilibrio tra astrazione e figuratività, Comte mette in relazione le idee dell'epoca moderna e contemporanea affinando la nostra sensibilità per le forme e i materiali e la nostra percezione degli spazi.
